Tipping? What to tip for bad service...

I've had a little bit of a disagreement with people over tipping. My opinion is that you tip at least 15% no matter what, no matter how bad the service is. Here's why. If you're determined to tip cheaply, you will find ways in which your server screwed up. The problem is that servers take the heat for anythign that might go wrong from teh time you order your food. Teh food is late: cook's fault but server take the blame. the drinks don't come fast enough: management's fault, but server takes teh blame... Basically, I think that if you're not determined to tip at least 15%, then you probably shoudl avoid going to restaraunts. If you can't afford a 15% tip, then you can't afford to eat out. Bottom line: crappy service get 15%. good service gets 20%.

Here's a question I'm less sure about: do you tip at all-you-can-eat buffets if a server gets your drinks? I don't know. you tell me and let me know.

"Teh food is late: cook's fault but server take the blame."

Actually that is NOT ALWAYS TRUE! I just had about a few months ago a waiter that took my husband and I's appetizer order when my husband and I ordered our drinks. We were waiting a while and asked him about our appetizer, because we had waited a longer time than normal I found. It turns out he NEVER PRINTED THE TICKET, because he claimed he FORGOT to put the order in, meaning it was *HIS* FAULT we waited a LONG TIME for an appetizer, NOT THE COOK'S AT ALL. We waited literally a half an hour, which that is the amount of time we should have been receiving our entrees. Also, there could be times when a server goes get table 6's order that is a party of 2 doesn't put the order in right away. Like I've seen a waiter get our entree order and go greet a table of 6 people BEFORE putting in our food order. Well, HE DELAYED our food from getting cooked faster or being NEXT on the list, because in that amount of time, another server put in another table's order more than likely, making us wait longer to eat. So YES, the server DOES have SOMETHING to do with "HOW LONG" you wait for your food. If I order at table 5 and the server puts in the order RIGHT AFTER, OBVIOUSLY I will get my food as SOON as I can, where as if my server goes to greet 2 tables of 4 people and busses a table BEFORE going to put the order in, well OF COURSE table 5's order will be delayed at least 5 minutes or more.

"We were waited on and order was taken at 11:40am, and did not receive our lunch until 12:25pm. I understand that the noon hour is busy, but not only did our drinks run out, but our waitress avoided coming to our table.
This not only made us late coming back to work, but the food was cold. When we looked on our ticket our order was not placed until 12:08."

Basically this letter that someone wrote states their order was delayed by their WAITRESS, by not putting in the order until 12:08p.m.

My point is, the server DOES have a LOT to do with *HOW LONG* people wait for their food, NOT just the cook. If you don't print a ticket, how in the world are the cooks going to KNOW to cook it? If the order doesn't go into the computer for 10 minutes, well gee, that's 10 minutes the customers could have had their meal quicker. Even if I order a well done steak, if the server waits to put my order in for 10 minutes and basically in a sense *SITS* on my order for that long, I'll be waiting LONGER for that steak, it's just COMMON SENSE.

"the drinks don't come fast enough"

A waiter at Applebee's made me wait 25 minutes LITERALLY for my margarita, because he FORGOT to get it. SOMETIMES IT DEFINATELY IS THE SERVER'S FAULT 100%!

"My opinion is that you tip at least 15% no matter what, no matter how bad the service is."

Tell me the truth, if you had someone ask you "You can work for this $20 bill for an hour or you can just take it, wouldn't you just take the $20 bill and NOT work for it? WHY would anyone try not to make mistakes if they know they are going to get PAID ANYWAY, NO MATTER HOW MANY MISTAKES YOU MAKE? I TEACH the servers NOT to give me bad service, by LOWERING the tip when I have bad service so I NEVER GET THAT HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AGAIN. It's just like when a child gets punished or you get in an car accident. YOU LEARN THROUGH EXPERIENCES HOPEFULLY. If I pay you everytime 15% no matter what bad service you gave me, then I wouldn't be happy as a customer. I will treat the server the way they treat me. If they give me good service, I'll give them a good tip. The way mistakes are handled, plays a BIG PART in if I forgive the server as much as far as their tip goes. I just had a waitress the other day tell me "I'm so sorry about that", just for forgetting my ranch. If the server is nice, I'll be nicer in the tip and more forgiving of the mistake. That forgotten ranch was not considered in the tip as much, because she was NICE and rectified the situation in a timely manner.

I AM NOT GOING TO SET MYSELF UP TO GET BAD SERVICE. You KNOW what you did wrong by me giving you a BAD TIP. You *TRY* to get my order correct, you will get a MUCH BETTER TIP.

I just had a waitress yesterday that took my order for an appetizer, which I ordered a side of ranch with it. SHE brings it out with NO RANCH. NOW, HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT IF YOU WRITE THE ORDER DOWN TO REREAD THE ORDER AND COMPARE IT TO THE PLATE OF FOOD TO SEE THAT MY RANCH WAS MISSING? IF YOU DON'T PUT ANY EFFORT, WHY SHOULD I PAY SOMEONE WELL TO NOT EVEN *TRY*. She brought me 2 sides of tartar sauce instead of 3 as I had ordered. She forgot my fries and NEVER apologized. She didn't apologize for ANY of her mistakes. I gave her 12%. She DESERVED IT FOR ALL THOSE RIDICULOUS MISTAKES AND NOT EVEN TO SAY ONE SORRY EVEN IS JUST MEAN. I PAY SERVERS WELL THAT DO THEIR JOB CORRECTLY SO I DON'T HAVE THAT BULL SHIT TO GO THROUGH!
